Day one of Orkney, explored stromness finalised fishing project plans, went for a ten mile hike, got lost in one if the remotest places in the world, hiked another two miles for shelter from the winds, met the nicest couple who rescued me, took me to see seals and sights of Orkney, fed me tea and then delivered me safely back to my hostel. Wandering around the jardin de Luxembourg, and lunch the Latin quarter

What I thought about were photos in which I see beauty where many other people would not — Robert Frank’s grit, Roy DeCarava’s inky depths, Sally Mann’s shadowy, searching self-portraits. I wouldn’t call any of this photography pretty, but I do see it as powerful and extraordinarily moving. Adams, that is, prompted me to see that photography has changed my ideas about beauty.
